Diffusion driven barite front nucleation and crystallisation in sedimentary rocks

چکیده

The need to investigate mineral precipitation in heterogeneous sedimentary rock with complex pore network and composition arises problems like clogging by barite during sulfate-rich water injection geological reservoirs, the durability of long term storage nuclear waste or damage induced crystallisation. At LFCR (Laboratoire des Fluides Complexes et leurs Réservoirs, Anglet, France), we aim reproduce objects laboratory conditions. In this frame, built a contra diffusive set up precipitate front two samples, Lavoux oolitic limestone Vosges Sandstone fraction clays. Two reservoirs filled respectively BaCl2 Na2SO4 dissolved milli-Q are contact porous sample so that ions diffuse through it. X-ray tomography shows is precipitated both samples at different positions depending on diffusion ions. SEM/EDS microanalysis polish sections highlight location its connectivity. limestone, connected present. Fine aggregates preferentially smallest pores sample, whilst crystals precipitating large macropores (>20 μm) show preferential orientation. We propose Gibbs free energy barrier for nucleation lower micrite small than euhedral calcite pores. Finally, homogeneous highest. sandstone, scattered well-crystallized pores, more striking thin layer interfoliar space chlorite-smectite complex. Consequently, smectite can concentrate barium adsorption. Then because sulfate sodium concentrations increase, ultimately desorbed precipitate.

Sedimentation and Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are one component of the modern threefold classification of rocks. They derive from the lithification of sediments, which are produced in basically two ways: by the mechanical deposition of grains derived from the alteration of other rocks (detrital or clastic rocks), or as chemical precipitates or grains formed organically or inorganically from an aqueous solution. The whole ...

Experimental observations and numerical modelling of diffusion-driven crystallisation processes.

This paper reports experimental results and modelling on the crystallisation processes induced by counter diffusion method of a precipitant agent in a lysozyme protein solution. Comparison between experimental observations and numerical simulations in the presence of convection and sedimentation and without them (suppressed using gel) provides a validation of the model. Different values of the ...

Triple oxygen isotope variations in sedimentary rocks

Relatively large (P0.2&) O anomalies in the geologic record have been used to recognize atmospheric processes such as photochemical reactions and to trace changes in the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere through time. However, recent oxygen isotope measurements of terrestrial rocks, minerals and waters also reveal common, smaller (but statistically significant) deviations fr...

Relationship between susceptibility induced field inhomogeneities, restricted diffusion, and relaxation in sedimentary rocks.

Low field relaxation and diffusion measurements have become essential tools to study the pore space of sedimentary rocks with important practical applications in the field of well logging and hydrocarbon extractions. Even at Larmor frequencies below 2 MHz, diffusion measurements are often affected noticeably by internal field inhomogeneities. These field inhomogeneities are induced by susceptib...
